Matter and Elements:
This takes students through the states of matter, elements, compounds, chemical symbols,
and common bonds.
Minerals:
Students will explore what minerals are, where they come from, how they are bonded
together, and how they form the varieties of rocks that we have on Earth.
Students will also be learning to use identification tools, and techniques to identify
minerals.
Rocks:
This area of learning involves the rock cycle, rock formations, classification and
identification of rocks, as well as the types of formations commonly found in the central
Maine area.
The structure of the Earth:
Students will examine the general internal and external characteristics of the structures
of the Earth from the Upper lithospheric plate(the crust), to the inner core.
Plate tectonics and continental
drift:
Students will be looking at what continental drift is, what the mechanisms are that drive
crustal plate movements (plate tectonics), and the types of evidence that we have that
prove crustal plate movement.
Earthquakes:
In this particular area of geology students will be exploring the probable causes,
characteristics, and effects of earthquakes.
Students will also study seismic detection techniques/methods, epicenter and focal point
depth, and current earthquake warnings of potential catastrophes.
Volcanoes:
This awesome section of geologic study has students analyzing types of volcanoes, how they
form, where they form, cause/effect, and volcanic activity worldwide.
